YMCA School Age Child Care
The Wilmerding YMCA School Age Child Care program at Trafford Elementary/Middle School will open January 5th 2009. Please contact Tom Yeager, Sr. Program Director at 412-823-9000 or tyeager@ymcapgh.org for more information.



Sunrise Food Bank

The students at Sunrise collected 3809 pieces to donate to the St Barbara food bank. This food bank serves any resident of Penn Township that may find themselves in need.Mrs. Shannon Smith's class were the winners - they had the most donations given. Thanks to all who gave!!!

Invention Convention
Twenty six students from Penn-Trafford attended the Invention Convention, a function sponsored by the Westmoreland County Gifted Coalition. Grades K-12 were represented, there were hundreds of entries, and Penn-Trafford brought home some winners. In the third grade division, Olivia Haberberger (Sunrise Estates Elementary) received third place for her creative dog toy made from recycled materials. In the fourth grade division, Jacob Mursch (Trafford Elementary) received second place for his waterproof TV remote that is solar powered and has a tracking device (so it cannot get lost)! In the fifth grade division, Teddy Taylor, (Sunrise Estates Elementary), received third place for his invention of a computerized location board that would be purchased by large department stores. Patrons of that store would be able to find the location of items by simply touching a screen in the front of the store.

Penn-Trafford Student Receives Extra Effort Award

Congratulations to Luke Graham for receiving the KDKA TV Extra Effort award! On December 11th, KDKA's Bob Pompiani recognized Luke for his extra effort as a Scholar Student Athlete. Luke is an 11th grade two-sport student athlete at Penn-Trafford High School who maintains a 4.0 grade point average. The award recognized Luke for his ability to maintain high academic standards along with his athletic accomplishments.

WCMEA Junior High Band Festival
Diana McDade, clarinet, Steven Begg, tenor saxophone, Vincent Sofelkanik, tenor saxophone, and Daniel Henderson, trumpet, will represent Trafford Middle School in the WCMEA, Westmoreland County Music Educators Association, Junior High Band Festival on Friday, January 16th and Saturday, January 17th at Norwin Senior High School. Mr. Brian Balmages, composer, arranger, clinician and educator with FJH Music Publishing Company, will conduct the festival. The band will rehearse all day on January 16th and January 17th. The band will perform a public concert on January 17th at 2:00 pm in the Norwin Senior High School auditorium.

PMEA District #1 Jr. High School Orchestra
Joseph Bernardino, will represent Trafford Middle School in the PMEA, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, District #1 Junior High School Orchestra Festival on Friday, January 23rd, and Saturday, January 24th, at Pine-Richland High School. Dr. Stephen Benham, Associate Professor of Music Education at Duquesne University, will conduct the festival. The orchestra will rehearse on January 23rd and 24th.
